Gwri, The Forgotten Name

The name Gwri has become a forgotten name in our modern world. The regal name stems from a mythological Welsh tale. In this story lies the origin of Gwri.

The adventure begins with a King who trades places with another king of an otherworld to defeat his enemy. The king named Pwyll is successful and returns home and marries a woman by the name of Rhiannon. They have a son, but overnight he is stolen from his crib, and Rhiannon is accused of killing her child. She is forced to sit at the castle’s entrance and carry people on her back for punishment.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the kingdom, a man who raises horses named Teyrnon deals with a case of missing a pony from his prized mare. He creates a plan to stay watch the next time his mare gives birth, and he discovers a claw that comes up from the otherworld and snatches the foal. Teyrnon. Prepared chops off the claw of the beast and find that the creature had also taken a baby. He rescues the baby, and he and his wife name the baby boy Gwri.

As the golden-haired boy grows, they realize that he is Rhiannon’s and Pwyll’s son and return the child to his parents, who finally get to name him, Pryderi, meaning care or worry. The story of the name Gwri is a love tale. However, the popularity of Gwri is not among the top favourites. Currently, the top Welsh name for boys is Oliver.
